The high-stakes 17th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 will see the Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals lock horns with Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challenges Bangalore at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday at 7pm.

The Capitals, currently placed second, will become the second team to qualify for the WPL 2024 playoffs if they win Sunday’s fixture against the Royal Challengers, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians having become the first team to book their knockouts berth with a thrilling win over the Gujarat Giants on Saturday.

A victory for the third-placed Royal Challengers over the Capitals, meanwhile, will take them to eight points and strengthen their net run rate as well as the chances to make the playoffs ahead of the UP Warriorz, who are breathing down their neck in the fourth place with six points and a game — against the out-of-the-playoffs-race Giants — to go.

Four consecutive wins have been bookended by a loss each in the Capitals’ six matches so far, their most recent fixture having ended in an epic implosion that led to the UP Warriorz snatch an improbable one-run victory. The Royal Challengers themselves, too, are coming off a defeat, by a margin of 19 runs at the hands of the Giants.

Jess Jonassen, the Australia and Capitals left-arm spinner, holds the Purple Cap for being the highest wicket-taker of the tournament so far with 10 wickets from four innings at an average of 9.50.

Smriti Mandhana, who has 243 runs from six innings at an average of 40.50 and is the second-highest run-scorer in this iteration of the WPL, will hold the key to the Royal Challengers efficacy with the bat in what, in the larger scheme of things, could prove to be a must-win game for the side.
